Rob Sowersby ’55

Rob Sowersby graduated from Amherst in 1955 and majored in history. Rob first volunteered as class secretary from 1961-65. He liked it so much that when the position became available again in 1995, Rob agreed to serve as class secretary ever since and is now also the web editor for the Class of 1955. Rob hosts quarterly Zoom meetings with his class to talk about interesting subjects and create meaningful interactions with each other.

How did you get started volunteering for Amherst?

I was close to the class secretary in 1960. He had recently graduated from medical school and was swamped. Knowing my keen interest in our class and reunions, he asked me to write the Class Notes over HIS name for the next year. If I did that, at our 1961 reunion, he would see that I would be elected the class secretary to succeed him. That's what happened.

Why do you volunteer with Amherst College?

I feel the men with whom I spent four years at Amherst were the sharpest group I shall ever know. Still think that is true after some 70+ years!

What is your favorite part of volunteering with Amherst?

Contacting classmates via phone and then writing the Class Notes for the alumni magazine. I also compose what I call the Unabridged Class Notes, which has no word limit and is sent via email only to classmates.

What would you say to someone considering a volunteer opportunity with Amherst?

I am humbled by the favorable comments I receive from classmates. My wife, a Smith College graduate, says, "They are glad they don't have that job!"
