Non-Amherst College Programs

The following programs held on the Amherst College campus are owned and operated by private organizations which contract with the college for the use of its facilities. Amherst College is not a sponsor or partner of these programs and is not responsible for their operations.

Illustration Master Class

The Illustration Master Class (IMC) returns to Amherst for its 13th year in the summer of 2020. This program offers professional and aspiring artists the environment, guidance, and inspiration they need to push their skills to the next level. Throughout the week, participants will have the unique opportunity of engaging, questioning, and learning from renowned artists, including Boris Vallejo, Greg Manchess, and others. Each day, participants of The IMC enjoy working on independent projects, engaging with other artists, and attending informative lectures given by impressive and knowledgeable presenters. Led by instructors with expertise in fields ranging from graphic design to fine painting, participants of all interests will leave the program with a new momentum and love for their craft.

ITD (Institute for Training & Development)

The Institute for Training and Development provides participants a forum to experience profound inter-cultural experiences as they deepen their understanding and knowledge of the world around them. ITD consists of various programs and training sessions, each of which encourages the exchange of ideas, the development of understanding, and the spread of knowledge. Programs offered include Minority Integration in the West, the Development of Civic Education Curricula, and many others. With a new sense of knowledge and a deeper understanding of the world around them, participants leave ITD inspired, confident, and ready to make a positive impact in their communities.

Long River Tai Chi

Long River Tai Chi returns to Amherst this summer, offering participants the opportunity to experience the tradition of Tai Chi. Practiced for both its defense-training and health benefits, Tai Chi teaches its students to be soft and pliable in order to defeat forces that are hard and strong. This program will focus on the practices of solo form, push hands, sword, and the ways in which the lessons of TaichiChuan can be applied to our daily lives. Program sessions will be held in the Amherst College athletic facilities. Overnight campers will reside in one of Amherst College’s historic and recently renovated residence halls.

Nike Adult Tennis Camp

Nike Adult Tennis is perfect for adults looking to improve their tennis skills in a welcoming and supportive environment. Designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced players, the program offers participants the opportunity to learn from some of America’s most experienced and respected tennis coaches. Daily activities in the camp include instruction, drills, and match play. Participants will leave the camp with new friends, great memories, and a renewed enthusiasm for their sport.

Rare Book School

Rare Book School (RBS) is an independent, non-profit and tax-exempt institute supporting the study of the history of books and printing and related subjects, governed by its own board of directors. Founded in 1983, it moved to its present home at the University of Virginia in 1992. Rare Book School provides innovative and outstanding educational opportunities to study the history, care, and use of written, printed, and digital materials. Through the hands-on, intensive examination and analysis of textual artifacts in seminar-style classes taught by an international faculty of distinguished scholars and professionals, Rare Book School fosters the knowledge and expertise essential to the responsible stewardship of the historical archive in all its richness and pluriformity.

Participant Age Range / Eligibility: Applications for Rare Book School courses are considered on a rolling basis until a course has reached enrollment capacity. 

Road Scholar - ESCAPE Camp (Extraordinary Sports Camp Adults Playing Enthusiastically)

ESCAPE Camp is an adult sports camp perfect for those who want to play like children but relax like adults. Staff led activities include tennis, swimming, dancing, wall climbing, dancing, Pilates, aqua aerobics, and more. This inclusive program welcomes those who are looking to try new activities or improve on developed skills. Happy hour is offered daily. The program is offered as both a day and a sleep-away camp. For those electing to sleep-away, overnight accommodations are provided in one of Amherst College historic residence halls. All campers will enjoy meals in the Amherst College dining hall. New and returning campers are welcome.
