Irving Segal '42
Irving Segal passed away in his sleep on October 5, 2006, at his condo in Coral Gables, FL. Irving grew up in Worcester, MA, and graduated from Classical High there. He then followed two brothers, Robert ’36 and Edward ’39, to Amherst.
After graduating from Amherst, Irving joined the family business, the Worcester Paperbox Company, which his father had started. In the mid-’50s, when his father passed away, Irving, who was then heading the New Hampshire division of the Paperbox Company, moved to Miami along with his mother and sister.
In Florida, Irv became a successful real estate executive and also had a career teaching English to Spanish-speaking immigrants.
Irv was always extremely loyal to Amherst; he was a fixture at southeast Florida Amherst events for years. In the early 1990s, along with Robert and Edward, he established the Segal family scholarship at Amherst which is given annually to a deserving resident of Massachusetts or Israel. Although personally very frugal, Irv was always very generous when it came to Amherst.
Irv took great pride in the fact that a number of other Segals followed him to Amherst: Terry ’64, Alan ’67, Eric ’72, Jessica ’95, Ethan ’99, Jordan ’02, and Adam ’03.
