In Memory

The alumni office was recently informed of the death of Class Agent Bill Allan at his home in Harrison, N.Y., on Aug. 25, 2007.

At Amherst, Bill was a member of Phi Kappa Psi and active on all its interscholastic sports teams—though never quite making the varsity level.  Scholastically he fared better—making junior year Phi Beta Kappa and graduating magna cum laude.

Bill was a math major and, with Professor Atherton Sprague as monitor, pointed toward an actuarial career.  Following graduation, he joined the Home Life Insurance Company of New York.  After 43 years of service in various actuarial and management capacities, he retired in 1976 as executive vice president and director of the company.  Then, he and his wife, Christine Cameron Allan, shared happy retirement years between their homes in Harrison, N.Y., and Naples, FL, until her death in 1994.  Bill continued as an active member of the Rye Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and trustee.  He was an avid golfer and an emeritus member of the Apawamis Golf Club of Rye.  Professionally, he was an emeritus fellow in national and international actuarial associations.

Bill is survived by a daughter, Judith Allan, of Harrison, N.Y.
