In Memory

New York, NY. October 30, 2009. Alan David McClare, 65, native of Bronxville, NY. Predeceased by his parents, Ruth (Gardner) and Carlyle S. McClare, his brother Andrew V. McClare. Survived by his sister-in-law, Mary H. McClare, niece, Kathryn McClare; nephews, Michael and Susan McClare, William and Stacy McClare, Brian McClare and their children. Also survived by cousin, Elizabeth (Geiser) Wardell and daughters. Barbara McDermott and Ginger VanWinkle and families.

Alan was an exchange student in Germany from Bronxville High School; earned a B.A. from Amherst College; studied in France while attending Duke University and earned a Ph.D. in Modern European History.

Alan McClare was executive editor for Sociology, Anthropology, and Education at Rowman & Littlefield, where he was a generous and beloved colleague. That position was the culmination of several decades of work in these disciplines. During that time he worked closely with a wide range of academic and educational authors to bring their books to fruition and to assure their success. At that extended task he succeeded, and those authors always expressed both admiration for his effort and gratitude that he had been so giving of his time and attentiveness. And yet it is as a person--rigorously, even fiercely intelligent, but gentle of temperament and kind of disposition--that he will always be remembered.

Funeral service is Saturday, December 12, at 11 a.m., at St. Ignatius of Antioch, 552 West End Avenue, New York. Internment will be private.
