Gerald Silsbee, 87, died on Oct. 13, 2009, in Newport Beach, Calif., with his daughter Christian at his side. He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Julia Elizabeth Silsbee. He is survived by his son, George Silsbee; his daughter, Christian Silsbee Poor; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Before entering Amherst, Jerry graduated from Groton School. In the early 1950s, he moved to Newport Beach, where he spent most of his business years in international medical sales.

Jerry had a lifelong interest in learning, classical music and woodworking. The academic mentors who stand out in Jerry’s memory are David Morton, Larry Packard and Henry Mishkin for their insistence on serious scholarship.

The class extends sincere condolences to Jerry’s family.
