Barry Gately died in April in Providence. He was a graduate of Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, Mass. While there, he was a four-year letterman in football and golf as well as the editor-in-chief of the school magazine. He was an MVP in football his senior year.
At Amherst, Barry was a member of DKE, majored in history. He continued his athletic interests in both football and golf and was the captain of the latter in his senior year. I remember the fun we had with the anthropological measurements in our (required) course in freshman science.
After graduation, Barry attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology School of Printing. Over the next 20 years, he successfully worked in the printing business. He last served as the vice president and CEO of Geneva Printing and Publishing Company in 1975.
His lifelong interest in golf was expressed by his serving from 1975-83 as an official for the Rhode Island Golf Association and the tournament director for the Wannamoisett Junior Invitational. In 1983, Barry was named vice president of the United States Challenge Cup Junior Gold Foundation. Twelve years later, he was named president of the organization. In 1997, he captained Team New England to victory over Team Florida in the annual challenge cup match.
He continued his support for Governor Dummer Academy, attending most of their football games and other events. In 2002, he was named the GDA alumnus of the year.
He continued to be an avid and accomplished golfer. Over the years, he was a member of the Rhode Island CC, Wannamoisett CC, Warwick CC and the Olympic Club in San Francisco. He was a junior club champion at Warwick CC, club champion at Rhode Island CC and the 1978 Foster Cup champion at Wannamoisett. He recorded four holes-in-one.
In addition, he was active in Big Brothers of America and was a sponsor for members of Alcoholics Anonymous.
