In Memory

Dan’s classmates and fraternity brothers at Delta Upsilon were saddened to learn that he recently died of a heart attack in Mineola, N.Y., on Long Island. Although Dan was said to have experienced periodic heart problems, his passing was sudden and came as a shock to his friends in the Amherst community.

Dan was a loyal fraternity member who always took pride in his association with DU and the achievements of all of his friends in the house. He faithfully attended most of the athletic events in which they participated and was a vocal supporter of both the stellar athletes and those who were less accomplished. There was rarely a fraternity social event or activity that Dan didn’t help organize. His presence was always conspicuous at parties as a result of his bright polyester pants and V-neck sweaters, in which he seemed ready to tee off in a golf match.

Dan came from nearby Ludlow, Mass., and was a terrific golfer, both before and during his tenure at Amherst. A captain of the 1975 team, Dan was a tough competitor and earned four letters at Amherst. He was an All-American and the top golfer on the team for most of his four years.

Following graduation, Dan worked in New Jersey, initially with a high-tech component aerospace company. Later he returned to his passion for golf as a teaching pro on Long Island, where he instructed students for the past 10 years. Although we had lost touch with Dan for awhile, it was good to reunite with him several years ago at a golf tribute event for Coach Tracy Mehr. Dan was healthy, still had his smooth swing and had overcome some personal setbacks. He was enjoying life with his wife, Carolyn, and their son, Christopher.

Dan is survived by his father and a brother, Greg, as well as by Carolyn and Christopher. He will be remembered fondly by friends and classmates, especially his DU brothers.
