ALLEN KLIPPEL ’44
Allen died March 30, 2011, of natural causes. After graduating from Amherst, he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Gilmore. He was a pioneer in the field of emergency medicine. An associate professor at Washington University, he wrote the Manual of Emergency and Outpatient Techniques. He was president of the St. Louis County Medical Society and a charter member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine. He held five patents including a silver compound for the treatment of burns and a spine board used in automobile accidents. Allen appeared before the U.S. Congress to testify in favor of mandatory installation of seatbelts in cars. He was the director of emergency medical services for the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County and was a member of the National Disaster Medical Assistance Team. In 2002, the Allen P. Klippel Lecture Series in Emergency Medicine at Washington University was established in his honor.
