Sustainable, affordable, efficient, and accessible transportation options help people travel while minimizing harm to the environment. In addition to providing a walkable/wheelable campus, Amherst provides a variety of sustainable transportation options, including bike share programs, PVTA buses, shuttle services, and electric car charging stations.

Did You Know?

Campus Bike Share

Our Bike Share allows members of the campus community to check out a bike for free to go on a bike ride, run errands, or just cruise campus. Bikes can be checked out at the front desk at Alumni Gym.

The PVTA Bus

Faculty, staff, and students have access to a free Five College bus system (PVTA) that has daily, regular routes among the five colleges and in the area. Here's a guide to riding the PVTA!

The Norwottuck Rail Trail

The Norwottuck Rail Trail is an eleven mile bike trail, first opened in 1992, connecting Northampton and Amherst. The trail goes through Amherst’s campus so it is readily accessible to our campus community.

The Tread Shed

The Tread Shed is the campus bike shop that helps support the campus biking community. The shop provides support for those who want to learn about and work on their bikes, offers a work to own program fixing up abandoned bikes, and regularly conducts workshops and trainings on basic bike maintenance.

What’s Next

Consider developing a campus bike rental / leasing program that will offer students an opportunity to lease a bike for a semester or for the academic year.
Continuing support and upkeep of the bike share program.
Developing more educational materials about alternative transportation methods in the area.
