Conserving Water

Every Drop Counts

Water conservation, reuse and recycling, and effective rainwater management practices are important in maintaining and protecting finite water supplies. Water conservation and effective rainwater management also reduce the need for effluent discharge into local surface water supplies, which helps improve the health of local water ecosystems. Amherst works to conserve water, protect water quality, and treat water as a resource rather than a waste product.

What’s Next

  • Considering dual flush toilets as toilets get replaced across campus.
  • Allowing for more native landscaping in select areas in lieu of turf to reduce water demands.
  • Phasing out bottled water, and encouraging use of water bottles and the various water filling stations across campus.
  • Increasingly using water efficient appliances like washing machines and motion sensor faucets as technology improves and more efficient options become available.
