Paul Sherwood ended his life on February 14, 2002, after battling manic depression for nearly thirty years. In his nearly sixty-two years of living, Paul was continually driven to be the best he could be in whatever he attempted to do.
Born in Oceanside, NY, on November 6, 1940, he grew up on Long Island. Paul joined us at Amherst in the fall of 1958. Amherst College rapidly became and remained his favorite place on earth and was, according to his wife Elizabeth (Liz), the place where he spent his happiest days. Paul dove into Amherst full bore, immersing himself in his pre-med (dental) studies and charging with full enthusiasm onto the football, lacrosse and rugby fields.
In the spring of '59, Paul pledged Delta Upsilon and, during his three-plus years there, became an integral part of its storied history.
In his junior and senior years, he roomed with Jody Freeman, Al Deatt, Dave Pagnini and Tony Cotignola - a combination that produced many lighthearted and memorable escapades. Paul earned an animal nickname, as we all did at that time. His was Bull. If my recollection is correct, Paul's name came as a result of his propensity to butt his head on his pillow when he was in a deep sleep. This phenomenon became a spectator draw for his DU brothers on multiple occasions.
Meanwhile in the classroom, Paul applied his high motivation and intellect and did well academically at Amherst. Following graduation, Paul enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania dental school along with other classmates including Bruce "Boo" Elliot. As usual, Paul got a high return on the monetary investment in his education. He became a talented dentist and established a highly successful dental practice in Bolton, Connecticut.
In 1985, Paul and second wife Liz moved to Cavendish, Vermont, where they purchased and operated a quaint general store. They relocated to West Wardsboro in 1986 and Paul changed careers in 1988 becoming a residential real estate agent for Century 21 Carriage Realty in West Dover. Quintessential Paul, he poured his heart and soul into his new profession and achieved great success. For the past several years he was the top producer for Century 21 Vermont.
Paul was always devoted to his work, enjoyed the love and compassion of his family and cared deeply for his many animals. I join with all of my DU brothers and fellow classmates in extending deepest sympathies to Paul's wife Liz and his children Daniel and Hayley.
