Policy Regarding Custodial Service In Science Center Research Laboratories At Amherst College

This policy seeks to clarify Amherst College’s position regarding the cleaning of research laboratories in the Science Center by the custodial staff

Scope

This policy applies to all Amherst College Science Center Laboratory personnel, i.e., staff, students, faculty, visitors

The Policy

Custodians in the Science Center will only enter research laboratories upon request. Requests can be made through the service center.

It is the responsibility of the requester to ensure that the lab is safe for the custodians during the entire time they are in your space.

Lab personnel shall not undergo work that involves the use of hazardous materials (and lasers) while custodians are present, as the custodians are not expected to wear personal protective equipment while working in your lab.

Custodians are not allowed to clean benches or equipment, touch laboratory chemicals, or clean up chemical spills.

You may still leave your trash and glass-only boxes outside the lab to be picked up, on a daily basis.

Your trash will not be picked up if it contains items deemed potentially dangerous to the custodian (eg. items suspected to be chemicals, pointy objects, blood, etc.)

Offices / write-up spaces will continue to be cleaned on a weekly basis. Teaching labs will continue to be cleaned on a regularly basis.
