The Anne Lebeck Fellowship in Classical Studies Fund was established in 2023 by a former student and friend of Professor Anne Lebeck, Richard Stites Mason, who studied under her at Columbia University. Anne Lebeck was a faculty member at Amherst in the Department of Classics from 1967-1973, during which time she was a devoted

The Fund is intended to broaden student access to the study of Greco-Roman Antiquity by providing funding for students’ study or research experiences during the summer or an equivalent period—for example, a field excavation or museum work in archaeology; programs offered by institutions such as the American School of Classical Studies at Athens or the American Academy in Rome; intensive language study; or other philological or archaeological research or training essential to the study of Classics in its broadest sense of interdisciplinary diversity. One aim of the fellowship is to grant students who have demonstrated exceptional expertise in their courses at Amherst with opportunities for study and research outside the classroom. Another aim is to further support those who may have not had the opportunity to study Classics in depth prior to arriving at Amherst. A third aim is to promote access to the study of Classics for first-generation and/or low-income (FLI) students, those traditionally underrepresented in the study of Classics.
The Classics Department will seek to award at least one fellowship per year. Students applying for funding should provide a description of the program of research or study to which they are applying, an indication of when they will receive notice of acceptance to the program, and a budget outlining anticipated costs. Awards will typically cover travel costs such as airfare, program or site fees, and living expenses. After holding the fellowship, students are required to submit a written report about their study and research program that explains its relationship to their study of classics at Amherst. Fellowship applications for the summer of 2024 should be emailed to Libby Maxey in the Classics Department by Friday, March 8.
