Senior Capstone Seminar

Listed in: Philosophy, as PHIL-497

Faculty

Lauren J. Leydon-Hardy (Section 01)
Joseph G. Moore (Section 01)

Description

The Senior Seminar is the capstone course in the Philosophy major and is taken by all seniors in the fall of their senior year.  It  serves as the comprehensive requirement for the major. The Seminar offers seniors the opportunity to do advanced original research in philosophy.  During the course of the semester, students will fine-tune and develop their initial research proposals into detailed research plans.  Then, through close reading and discussion of central texts, structured writing, and the eventual sharing of student drafts, they will complete a significant research project in philosophy.  On the basis of this work, some students may elect to apply to the Senior Honors Program, in which they can expand their research and develop it into a Senior Honors Thesis in the following semester.  In addition to the faculty teaching the seminar, students will also be assigned to a faculty member in the department as an advisor.  Since this seminar is a new requirement for the major, seniors in the graduating class of 2025 are not required to take it.  However, if they do elect to take the course, they will be released from one other requirement for the major.
