We recruit for a variety of positions on the team.  In the fall, we recruit for our Summer Intern program, and in the spring, our Sustainability Intern is selected in conjunction with the Sustainability Office.  If you'd like to experience the thrill of working for your alma mater while simultaneously getting a master class in investing, these internships are for you! We partner with some of the world’s best asset managers across the investment landscape - from public equity to venture capital, renewable energy to distressed debt - and our small, collaborative team means you will be put to work on projects that impact our investment strategy and the portfolio.  Responsibilities include quantitative and qualitative research and analysis related to investment managers, asset classes, portfolio management, asset allocation, risk management, and macro-economics. No investment experience required. Just bring curiosity, enthusiasm, and a love for the College!

This program is funded through the generosity of Amherst alum, Drew Shilling ’89. “The Investment Management industry can be difficult for undergraduates to break into because employers often are looking for demonstrated interest in the financial markets or previous industry experience. Even a summer internship can move a candidate’s resume to the top of the recruitment pile,” says Shilling. “I am very pleased to help underwrite the efforts of the Amherst Investment Office in providing relevant experience to interested students. These positions will help students and graduates determine whether they have a passion for the markets and investing and will also provide them with relevant experience should they decide to pursue a full-time position in the industry.”

Since the program’s inception in 2009, nearly 30 students have interned with the Investment Office. Interns typically depart as graduating seniors, often moving on to professional work in consulting, banking, law, and investment management. Recent professional destinations include Vista, Bain, Putnam, Lazard, and many more; recent academic destinations include Harvard Law School.

Erko Sakhiyeva ’25

My summer internship at the Investment Office was extremely educational and gratifying. It was an amazing opportunity to experience the finance world from the perspective of an endowment. The exposure to asset classes and types of investment managers was truly phenomenal. I learned so much from our incredible team: what to consider when building a partnership of trust, how to manage making important decisions with millions of factors at play, and how to ask the right questions, whether it is for our capstone projects or in meetings with investment managers. The internship taught me so much about finance and the world beyond it, and I will continue to carry those insights with me.

Matt Toporoski ’25

My internship at the Investment Office offered me the unique opportunity to learn about virtually every asset class throughout only one summer. The small investment team helped educate me about the different factors impacting portfolio selection and allocation while valuing and encouraging my input. Concurrently, firsthand interactions with investment professionals at a variety of firms gave me an understanding of the process and components going into an investment thesis.

Maksym Sherman ’24

My summer internship at the Investment Office provided me with a fascinating perspective on the world of finance from a capital allocator’s perspective. Some of my favorite memories from the internship came from asking questions like “how can asset managers consistently outperform their benchmarks?” or “what makes a startup want to partner with a venture capital firm?” While it is challenging to answer such questions with precision, I am thankful that the Investment Office illuminated which questions in finance are worth thinking about. My internship taught me that insights, both in finance and outside of it, come from focused and sustained questioning.

I spent three years and a summer in the Amherst Investment Office, and it was one of the most important financial experiences I have had. During my time, I learned a concise and clear method of how to think about being an investor.

Exploring this would not have been possible without the guidance and support of the people working in the Investment Office. They not only embody the best intellectual aspects of Amherst, but they also deeply cared about furthering my education in finance.

It steered me into a finance career while at the same time assisting Amherst in managing its investment portfolio and making smart decisions.
