Getting Duo 2FA to Work with Your New Phone

Every couple of years, most of us replace our old phones with a new one. The instructions below tell you how to get Duo 2FA working on your replacement phone.

Note: this will only work if your phone number has NOT changed. If your phone number has changed, call the Help Desk for assistance.

Instructions

  1. Install the Duo Mobile app on your new phone from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. When asked, allow the Duo app to send notifications and use your camera.
  2. On a computer, open a private/incognito browsing window. Go to the Amherst website (https://amherst.edu) and click Login from the Tools menu (the wrench icon).

  3. Enter your username and password. On the DUO prompt interface DO NOT initiate a push or call. If it automatically tries to send a push or call, click Cancel.
  4. On the left of the Duo screen, click Add a new device

  5. When prompted, select Call Me. Your phone will ring. Answer the call and press "1" on your keypad. If it automatically tries to send a push notification, click Cancel and select the Call Me option.
  6. When prompted, indicate that you are adding a Mobile phone.

  7. When you enter the phone number you'll see a message that says This number already exists, replace it? Check the box, then press Continue

  8. Select whether you are using an iPhone, Android, or Windows phone. If prompted, indicate that you have the Duo Mobile app installed.
  9. A QR code will appear on the computer screen (do not try and scan the demo photo below)

  10. On your new phone, launch the DUO Mobile app. Press Add Account or press + in the upper right. Using the camera on your phone, scan the QR code on the computer screen until you see a green check on the QR code.
  11. Your new phone is now associated with the Amherst account.
