Biography

Originally from southwest Virginia, Matthew Overbay is a Hudson Valley-based percussionist. Committed to the music of today, he has given the world premiere of James Wood's "Kalavinka Duos" and commissioned pieces from emerging voices such as Tanner Porter, Max Esformes and Kyle Krause. Interested in expanding the societal context of classical music, Matthew has presented Xenakis's solo music at the World Science Festival and regularly seeks cross-genre collaboration, most recently recording Travis Laplante's "Wild Tapestry". Matthew routinely performs with The Orchestra Now and has taught undergraduates at both Stony Brook University and Bard College. He holds a DMA from Stony Brook University, an MM from Johns Hopkins University, and a BM from New York University. For three summers, Matthew performed at Yellow Barn, crafting chamber music with performers from around the world. His playing can be heard on labels such as Sargasso Records, Cantaloupe Music, and Dacapo Records.
