Important End of Year Information

We ask all students to clean out your mailbox before departing for the summer.

All first class mail and USPS packages will be forwarded to the student's home address starting on June 1st. All other types of mail will be discarded and packages from UPS, FedEx, DHL, and Amazon will be RETURNED TO SENDER.

Packages may be sent home from the campus post office via USPS or any pre-paid label a student can provide. The maximum box dimensions for USPS can not exceed 108 inches. The maximum weight limit for USPS is 70LBs. If you plan to send items home larger then mentioned above you must use UPS or FedEx.

Students that will be on campus over the summer will continue to receive mail and packages as normal. Any student not on the summer housing list will have all mail and packages forwarded or returned to sender until student PO boxes open near the end of August.

First Year Students and Fall Semester Move In

Please do not send packages prior to August 22nd. Due to limited storage space any packages sent before this date may be subject to be returned to sender. First year and returning students may send packages no earlier than 5 days of your arrival date.

Students will need to have their student ID to pick up any package. If you do not have your college ID, a valid ID with your name will be required. Students are allowed to have another person pick up your package. This can be done by emailing the post office at postoffice@amherst.edu.

Handtrucks are available upon request at the student package window. A Student ID must be provided to borrow any equipment.

Packages are ready to be picked up when the Amherst College Post Office sends you a text message or email alert, not when UPS, Fedex, Amazon or the USPS mail system has said it was delivered. It may take 24 to 48+ hours to process your package depending on the time of year.

Please make sure you address all packages with your full name and student box number as follows:

All U.S. Mail

Your Name

P.O. Box 5000

How to Open your Amherst College Post Office Box:

  1. Turn dial RIGHT three times and stop at the first letter(s) in your combination.
  2. Turn dial LEFT and stop the second time at the second letter(s) in your combination.
  3. Turn dial RIGHT and stop at the third letter(s) in your combination.
  4. Turn the latch key LEFT to open.

Note: Your combination will be emailed to all first year students prior to arrival on campus.

It is very important that the correct box number be put on the envelope or package. Failure to put the proper information on your package could result in delays or failure to be delivered. Please put your full name and student box number on your packages!

Returning students, your mailbox number remains the same as previous years.

New students, you will be assigned a PO box number. You will receive an email from the Amherst College post office with your AC Box number and PO box combination. You will receive this information early to mid August. It will be sent to your Amherst email address.

Package Ordering and Delivery Options

When sending packages or ordering items to the college, ALWAYS try and choose an option with tracking. USPS Ground, Priority or Express. UPS and Fedex all come with tracking.

The post office strongly recommends NOT TO USE any same day or insta-cart delivery style services. This includes Walmart and Target same day deliveries. These options do not include tracking or who they are for. Items sent this way are almost always left outside the Keefe Campus Center. The post office is not responsible for lost or misdelivered packages left outside the building.

Whole Foods and Other Grocery Style Deliveries

Please meet the driver personally for these types of deliveries. If you do have them sent to the campus post office. PLEASE include your name, AC box #, and phone number. Give the driver instructions to bring your order/items into the campus center post office. Not to be left at the loading dock or outside the building.

Package and Mail Pick Up

All packages and mail are received and sorted by the Post Office.

After mail/packages are sorted, you can check your PO box for lettered mail and pick up any pending packages at the student package window. You will receive a text message or email from the Post Office when your package is ready to pick up.

Packages may not be left unclaimed. The Amherst College Post Office cannot store packages. Any student package left unclaimed for more than 10 business days, will receive a final notification before being returned to sender.

Miscellaneous and Unknown Packages

Packages are often sent with wrong box numbers, addresses, names, or even ripped labels. Any mail or package that we can not identify will be held for 7 days. If you do not receive a package notification from the Campus Post Office, and the carrier has notified you that the package was delivered then please come into the post office and contact us ASAP. Bring as much information as you can. Including the tracking information, date of delivery, and any other valuable information to help us identify your missing package. Packages or mail left unclaimed are returned to the sender.

Perishables and Refrigerated Items

Perishable items have to be picked up within five business days of notification. We do not have the ability to refrigerate items or packages. The Post Office reserved the right to discard any perishable items that have not been picked up within five business days. A final notice or email will be sent before any package is discarded.

Returns

The Amherst College Post Office can only return packages that have pre-paid labels attached, via USPS, FedEx, or UPS. QR Codes will not work. Each carrier picks up once daily Mondays-Fridays.

Rejections

If a student does not want to accept a package that has been delivered to the Mailroom, the student can refuse delivery. The Mailroom will return it to the carrier, but ONLY if it is unopened. If it has been opened then it must be handled as a return (see above).
