Academics & Eligibility

Amherst College has a long history with Doshisha University. Doshisha's founder and visionary leader, Joseph Hardy Neesima, graduated from Amherst in 1870. Students choose between the Global Education Model (formerly called CGE; no Japanese experience required) or the Nichibun program (formerly called CJLC; 1 year of college-level Japanese required). At the time of participation, students must be juniors with a >3.0 GPA.

This exchange is available in the fall semester only.

Housing and Meals

Students live in dormitories close to campus with other students. There is a dining hall located on-campus, and many restaurants and convenience stores for students to purchase meals and snacks.

  • Fall 2024: first week of September – January, 19 2025 (orientation dates TBD)

Finances

Doshisha University will guarantee scholarships for 3 Amherst students to spend the fall semester at Doshisha. The scholarship grants the following:

  • Tuition and housing for fall semester (including accommodation entrance fee)
  • 80,000 yen per month, for up to six months (about $600 USD as of 12/22)

Fees

  • Amherst Student Health Insurance (waivable)

Students should budget for other expenses, such as airfare, meals, visa fees, and any additional personal expenses. Please contact the Office of Financial Aid if you receive financial aid from Amherst.
