October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is “See Yourself in Cyber.” Maria will talk about the meandering path she took to get to where she is now as a freelancer/correspondent specializing in cybersecurity. She will also share her observations and insights on opportunities and challenges related to roles in cybersecurity, security incidents and data breaches, and technological advancements. 

Biography

Maria Varmazis (“var-MAH-ziss,” she/her) is a communications professional with deep experience in cybersecurity communications, as well as a published visual artist specializing in the graphic novel genre. She was recently invited as a visiting artist to NASA Goddard for the unveiling of the first James Webb Space Telescope images.

Varmazis has over a decade of experience working in the cybersecurity industry, having held previous roles in communications, marketing, and community management at cybersecurity companies Sophos and Rapid7. Her current work focuses on cybersecurity communications in podcasting; she is a frequent guest on the cybersecurity podcast Smashing Security and a story contributor to Darknet Diaries. Her current role is the Space Correspondent for The Cyberwire, where she covers cybersecurity in relation to satellites and space.

She is a graduate of UMass Amherst with a degree in journalism and Japanese.
