Zoom Phone service to offer greater flexibility

Amherst College is proud to announce a strategic partnership with Zoom Video Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZM), a global leader in video-first unified communications. With the rise of remote work and learning, we recognize the importance of providing a robust and reliable platform that enables seamless communication and collaboration, both inside and outside of the classroom. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in the technological evolution of IT at the college.

Through this partnership with Zoom, Amherst College aims to:

  • Replace our legacy (20 years old!) phone system with a cutting edge enterprise telephony system
  • Implement Zoom's comprehensive suite of tools - including Meetings, Webinars, and Rooms - to meet the diverse needs of the community
  • Allow for greater flexibility in how and when folks can communicate with one another in their work for the college

What’s Next

Throughout the month of October, Amherst College IT will be working with several partners to install and configure network equipment to support Zoom's systems - including e911 and copper "land lines".  We will also be migrating a handful of folks in IT to test things out and work on any issues that might arise.  Additionally, the Help Desk (ITSS) and the IT Systems and Networking Group (SNG) will be attending "Zoom U" training during this time period, so we can be ready to support the community with any issues that might arise.

Starting in November, we will be reaching out to individuals and groups to migrate them to the new Zoom system.  We are committed to a measured rollout to provide the best customer service possible, and promise not to make any abrupt changes without working with you first to be sure you're comfortable.

We will post periodic updates to this page. Please check back, or email askit@amherst.edu if you have any questions or concerns, and we'll get right back to you.

We're very excited for what's in store, and hope you are too!
